CGI.Backgrounds' Artist of the Month for June 2024: Erik Markstädter

For some automotive rendering projects, 3D artists can only create a single vehicle render. They need to convey as much as possible about the vehicle through one image.
In other cases, though, 3D artists have more leeway to depict the broader context of how a vehicle is driven in the real world. For these kinds of projects, artists often use a series of images to show a vehicle’s versatility and tell a more complex story about its capabilities.
Our June Artist of the Month, Erik Markstädter, does exactly that. Erik recently shared a series of beautiful renders of the Nissan GT-R Nismo. Instead of depicting the Nismo in a single location, Erik presents the vehicle in various contexts to highlight every facet of its performance.
In one render, we see the Nismo presented timelessly, driving down the road on a brilliantly sunny day in the desert . Erik’s choice to use a blurred foreground captures the Nismo’s speed, and the dramatically cloudy sky is perfectly reflected on the body panels and windows of the car.
For other renders, Erik takes a different approach. One render shows the Nismo from behind, driving into what appears to be a powerful thunderstorm. The raw beauty and power of the storm communicate the sporty vehicle’s strength and power.

Erik’s other renders take the Nismo to narrow, winding cliffside roads . These images showcase the Nismo in an entirely different setting, emphasizing its handling and ruggedness rather than its raw speed and power.

Erik even depicts today’s Nismo parked alongside a previous model in an equally rugged setting, highlighting the vehicle’s evolution and history.

Taken together, Erik’s renders tell a story about the Nissan GT-R Nismo which would be too complex to capture in a single image. His series of renders showcase every aspect of the vehicle, giving the viewer a complete picture and narrative of how the Nismo performs in the real world.
It helps, of course, that Erik’s renders are beautifully executed! Highly accurate and artful reflections capture the changing weather and road conditions around the car, and the selective use of blurred foregrounds communicates speed where it is needed and precision where it is not.
Erik also makes ideal use of CGI.Backgrounds’ extensive library of HDRi Maps and Backplates. Because we capture the real world in multiple weather and lighting conditions, and in thousands of locations, Erik had his choice of environments to showcase the Nismo’s full capabilities.
The result is a highly narrative, story-driven series of renders created entirely through visuals. We loved seeing Erik’s work and are proud to celebrate him as our Artist of the Month. You can see more of his work on our Behance page.
