Case Study: Full Motion Automotive Rendering with HDRi Maps

Many 3D designers think of HDRi Maps as a tool for creating static images. A designer might use an HDRi Map, combined with a digital twin of a vehicle or building, to create images for use in an advertising campaign or magazine.
In reality, though, HDRi Maps aren’t just for static images. High-quality HDRi Maps, like our RAY.HDR Maps here at CGI.Backgrounds, have such high resolution and contain so much visual and lighting detail that they can be used to create full-motion scenes.

Full Motion Automotive Rendering with HDRi Maps

Designer Théo Soumaille is a master of the technique of creating full-motion renders from automotive 3D models and HDRi Maps.
This rendering of a McLaren 765 looks lifelike and realistic. In the rendering video, the viewer initially sees the vehicle from above, in a dramatic urban environment.
As the camera pans down, we see detailed reflections on the vehicle itself, as the light from a skylight above illuminates the McLaren.
The camera ultimately moves to a frontal and then a rear and side view, showing both the vehicle and its surroundings.

How it’s Made

Amazingly, Soumaille created this stunning, moving render entirely within a virtual environment. He used a RAY.HDR Map from CGI.Backgrounds for both the visuals and lighting data.
Because our RAY.HDR Maps are color-calibrated and have 32k+ resolution, Soumaille had all the detail that he needed to move around within the HDRi Environment, knowing that both the visuals and lighting would update dynamically and accurately as he panned his virtual camera.
Soumaille renders his creations as a raw EXR. He uses the ACES color space, and then grades the final render in Adobe After Effects.
The result is an inspiring visual showcase of the McLaren, created without the need to go on-location or work with physical vehicles. Soumaille’s Instagram has numerous examples of other full motion renders.
That’s the power of high-quality HDRi Maps–they let you go anywhere, bringing your ideas to life. To access our premium HDRi Maps and RAY.HDR Maps for your own project, check out our plans and pricing page.
